Why Visit the Synagogue?
There is a great deal to see and learn on a visit to this hidden gem. The Synagogue has served the local community for over a hundred years. It opened in 1898 and was designed by celebrated local architect Arthur Wakerley. Inside, you will see beautiful decorations and many interesting features, including the Torah Scrolls and a mikvah – a bath used for ritual immersion.
The Synagogue’s historic school rooms have been transformed with the help of a National Heritage Lottery Fund grant into a Heritage and Visitor Centre. The centre houses display and a timeline which encourages visitors to explore the history of the Jewish Community in Leicester and to learn about Jewish festivals, celebrations, and way of life.
Your visit and experience will be further enhanced by our Ambassadors who will be on hand as guides. Ambassadors have a wealth of knowledge and stories to share.

Schools
We are accepting provisional bookings for school visits in 2021 and can also provide teachers with a range of resources to use in the classroom.
Virtual Visit
During the restrictions, we are offering schools the opportunity of a ‘virtual’ tour and Q&A session with one of our Ambassadors via Zoom. This provides a unique experience for your pupils to see the Synagogue and meet one of our Ambassadors, without leaving the classroom. Please complete the booking form below and we will be in touch to arrange your visit.
Group Visits
We normally welcome visitors and encourage adult groups (e.g. Church and University groups) and youth groups (e.g. Scouts) and others to book a tour of the Synagogue and Heritage Centre. We are currently taking provisional bookings for 2021.
Please complete the booking form below and we will contact you to arrange your visit and discuss any specific needs and learning objectives that you have.
